When you hit Anaura Bay turn north and head up the tar sealed road to this
relaxed, family, beachfront camping area in a fenced paddock beside a stream.
Great swimming and coastal bush walks are to be had from here. This basic
campground is open between Labour weekend (October) through to Easter.
This is back-to-basics camping. No toilets are provided. You also need to
bring your own portable cookers or barbecues and don't forget a chemical
toilet. (a dump station is provided in the peak season). Other facilities include rubbish collection and tap water (not suitable for drinking).

DESCRIPTION:

Turn east off SHwy 35, beside the Raponga River bridge, onto the road to Anaura Bay. The road is fairly steep but is sealed all the way and your reward is a magnificent sheltered beach at your camp doorstep - with views to nearby Motuoroi Island. We have 70 unpowered and 30 powered sites, 18 of which are prime beachfront positioning (Captain Cook landed here in 1769). The large, well-equipped kitchen is to be found in the historic school building that has a nice sheltered verandah running along the front with great sea views. The camp store is open 7 days during the peak season. Two blocks of ablutions (Wahine and Tane) have showers and toilets. There is also an outdoor swim shower and basins. Children have a play area. There is an automatic laundry. Pets are welcome only in off-peak times. Fishing (beach and boat), diving and crayfishing in the vicinity are excellent.  Wifi is available. Seasonal rates apply.

Athenree Lavender and Holiday Park is a family camp conveniently located beside SHwy 2 in the Athenree Gorge, 10 minutes drive to either Waihi in the north, or Katikati in the south. The office/Lavender Gift & Doll shop is situated beneath the popular Flip ‘n Bear café. Cross the bridge and set up camp on several grassy plateaux or on a larger open area divided by attractive lavender hedges. One side of the park is bounded by natural bush and the other by the Wairau Stream. There are 56 powered sites with plenty of taps, unlimited tent space and a number of ‘permanents’ in residence. A central amenities block has a somewhat empty modern kitchen, plus inside and outside dining. The smart ablutions have free showers, a disabled access suite and an automatic laundry. Down a gravel road south of Opotiki, you can camp surrounded by nikau palms
and tawa forest next to the Te Waiti Stream. This relaxed, self-registration campsite
is in picturesque surroundings and it is popular for fishing and swimming. Facilities
include toilets, picnic tables, BBQ areas and water supply from the stream. With
room for about 16 tents, no fees for camping here.

DESCRIPTION:

Bowentown Beach Holiday Park lies at the southern end of Waihi Beach. Four
beaches within walking distance offer a choice of surf or sheltered harbour
swimming. The camp provides lots of extras: stock up at the mini-market,
soak in the 6-seater spa or stay in touch via Skype, wireless internet hotspot,
or email kiosks. For families there are kayaks and fun bikes for hire. Sites
are spread across three, well-drained sandy terraces, some with great sea
views out to Mayor Island. A few permanent ‘weekenders’ add to the charm
of this holiday spot. The central, well-equipped amenities are spacious and
immaculately clean. The ablutions offer metered unisex showers, as well as
the single-sex variety and a baby’s bath. A family bathroom and separate
disabled bathroom have been added. Another toilet block gives extra facilities.
There is an automatic laundry along with open-air tubs and wringer. A large social room/kitchen is in house-proud order with both, hob and microwave
cooking, plus fridge/freezer and outdoor BBQ cooking options. Kids have a

DESCRIPTION:

Look for the large orange float on the tree by the gateway. From here,
your host June McDonald can arrange private seaside camping for you. The
camp is 10 minutes drive away on coastal farmland. There is no power in
the rudimentary building that houses the kitchen/living areas, with a Kent
woodburner and gas cooking. There is a flush toilet.  There is good fishing off the
rocks. June takes guided walks on the history of the area, a marae visit and
traditional medicinal uses of native plants. You can take a 2 hour walk to the lighthouse or many other shorter walks. Campsites are from $10 per person.

A favourite Mt Maunganui camp spot, this intimate camp is just a few minutes

Approximately 10 km southwest of Waihi, at the end of Dickey’s Flat Road (off Kennedy Road), lies this basic campsite. Access is unsealed and the large campsite is beside the Waitawheta River known for its trout and some great swimming holes downstream. Walking tracks lead to some of the best fishing spots on the river. Facilities include toilet and water supply from the stream.  There is a year-round liquor ban at the campsite.

DESCRIPTION:

15 km east from the junction at Te Araroa, down a partly sealed and gravel road, is an open rolling paddock on a rise beside the ocean. A bit of a slope for tenters. This is the best of back blocks camping, enjoying the sound of crashing waves. A long drop toilet is onsite and a small alcove with an honesty box. A great stopover for those in their self contained campers wishing to be close to the lighthouse (5km away) there is no power here.

As the name suggests, this camp looks directly over to White Island, with absolute beach access to stunning Waiotahi Beach which is just 5 km from Opotiki, en-route to Whakatane. Adjacent to its sandy shores there are
136 sites with power and taps. The site space is generous with a choice of
open or shady areas. The offce/shop sells basic supplies during peak holiday
times. The kitchen has stoves, microwave cooking and fridge/freezer and the adjacent alfresco dining area is under cover. There are free showers in the ablutions which have plentiful hot water and homely touches. An automatic laundry, gas BBQ’s and dump station are provided. Eight acres of rolling grounds have been lovingly landscaped and designed with the outdoor lifestyle in mind. With 51 powered sites, you can camp near

2 km from Maketu and three local beaches, set on an elevated site, this camp
enjoys delightful landscaped gardens with rural views and many homely touches.
Check in at the modern office which carries a few basic supplies. The kids

pony, birds, turtles etc. The amenities are excellent and include a smart, partly
covered pool next to the kitchen. Here there are modern appliances and a
dining space. The ablutions have free showers, disabled access/family suite and
plenty of bathroom extras. An automatic laundry and dump point are here
too. About 30 sites are available, all with power. When it comes to relaxing,
there is a TV lounge and games room, wireless hotspot and internet kiosks
and a great covered BBQ garden with tables and outdoor lighting. To support
the local kiwifruit industry, the camp has two distinct seasons, a summer one
to cater for holiday makers and a winter one to accommodate the seasonal
workers. Your friendly hosts are Phillip and Rosalie O’Reilly. Camping costs
$12.50 to $15 per person for a powered site and $10 to $12.50 for tents.

At the southern end of the town shops, look for the ‘Beach Access’ sign and
drive down a short, bumpy, gravel access road to this lovely beach reserve. In
a lovely setting between the sea and the lagoon, on slightly undulating land, is
this popular campground offering a very relaxed style of camping. There are 80

non powered sites, the wringer-plus-tub outdoor laundries are an adventure in
themselves. The single, metered, hot shower provides a central social spot (in
the queue!) on camp mornings, with the boiler being fed by paper from the
camp’s recycling programme. There are also flush toilets and basins for each
sex with 2 new toilets have been built.

relax and enjoy all the activities of the area. A minimum site charge applies:
$37 off-peak (for 1 to 2 adults) and bookings are essential in peak season.

3 km west of Matata township, turn off over the railway crossing to an
attractive seaside site with plenty of shelter. This camp has room for casual
campers amongst the colourful long-term ‘weekenders’ in residence which give
the camp a real beachy feel. The land has a rolling contour and a choice of
shady or sunny sites, plus a kids’ play area and gas BBQs. Tidy amenities include
two kitchens, one with dining space, a fridge/freezers, stoves and microwave.
Two ablution blocks are provided, along with a disabled access suite. One of
the ablution blocks has another little kitchenette attached. The laundry has
automatic washing machines and dryers. A book exchange operates at the
office. Shane and Rebecca will accept pets by arrangement, they must be on
leads at all times. Tent sites are $16 per person and powered sites $18.

On the eastern tip of Ohiwa Harbour, this peaceful camp is 4 km off SHwy 2 and offers absolute beachfront camping. Spacious, level grounds ensure that a sea frontage site can often be found or there are elevated terraced sites with superb views. As well as beach entertainment, there_s a lawn area set aside for outdoor games, an inviting children_s playground and jumping pillow. For indoor activities, the games room offers table tennis and air hockey. Smart, centrally-placed amenities include a fully-equipped kitchen opening out to a breezeway dining area under a shade sail or fry your catch in the BBQ nook. An all-round camping experience in a glorious location, this classic beachfront position has groomed grounds and well-appointed amenities. The beachfront vista is enhanced by the steaming White Island across the water. For boaties there is a ramp and jetty close by and an on-site fsh-cleaning area. Despite
having 260 sites with power and 120 for tents, this camp can be very busy
in summer. The extensive lawn sites are mostly flat with plenty of trees to
provide shady relaxation or choose from some lovely beachfront sites. A wellstocked seasonal shop means you can easily make use of the inviting stainless steel kitchen that opens to a central BBQ garden/dining area. Immaculately kept ablution blocks include a disabled access suite. There are a host of recreational facilities: tennis/basketball court, a pool and slide complex featuring two hydro waterslide rides and a splash park for the small children, mini golf, an adventure playground, trampolines, jumping pillow and even a beach volleyball court. A rustic, beachside camp about 17 km east of Opotiki, it has tidy grounds with 80 sites, 40 with power. You can see White Island from the open sites, which have direct access to the white sandy beach with gorgeous sunsets and great fishing. A tidy communal building has basic amenities and a kitchen without refrigeration. The laundry is an experience with an old wringer washing machine in good working order. The hot water showers are free & ablutions are clean. This camp is run by the Jackson family, who will need cash or cheque only for payment. All tent sites are from $10 per person and powered sites are $12.50 per person per night. Your pet will cost $2.50 with a limit of one dog per group.

The park is not beachside, but close to the river mouth and Opotiki town centre. It is 100 meters from the start of The Motu Cycleway. With a broad stretch of white sandy beach at your doorstep, this park has a superb location and stunning facilities. The surf club, beach reserve and village shopping with restaurant and takeaways, are all within an easy walk. The terrain is slightly banked back from the beach, with well-drained, terraced campsites. There are 260 sites in all, 240 with power. Smart kitchens offer wall ovens and microwave cooking, fridge and deep freezers. Three ablution blocks have free showers, a spectacular baby_s bathroom complete with _playful seal_ bath, new disabled access and family suites and a series of well-equipped laundries. The thoughtful layout means these facilities are easily accessible from all areas of the camp. Under a handful of norfolk pines and palms, 8km west of Matata, is a beachfront
strip camping ground with views across a white sandy beach. Take care on
the railway crossing to this self-registration campsite where a maximum stay
of two weeks is permitted. The camp is well supplied with taps and rubbish
bins, but has no powered sites. There are two blocks of ablutions, with four
unroofed, metered solar showers and flush toilets, all in fair condition. Two
outdoor tubs are provided for your laundry. Access gate closed each night
10pm and opens at 7am. Camping here will cost you $16 per night for two
adults and 2 children Extra adults $6, children $2. Under 5 years old free.
Dogs must be on a leash.
Maximum stay is 14 consecutive days.

A camp with a rustic atmosphere, it is set back from the beach in a rural location. The grounds are sheltered by mature trees and dotted with potted colour enhanced by the gardens and ‘creative’ touches of the many permanent ‘weekenders’ in residence. The colour scheme in the abulution is to say the least—challenging. There is a BBQ area. The limited kitchen has a stove, hobs, microwave and fridge/freezer. The two wornout ablution blocks are basic and the showers are free. There is an automatic laundry but no eftpos here.

A family owned holiday park set in 32 hectares of beautiful native forest at the foot of the Kaimai Ranges. Situated on a strip of beach where Turret Road crosses the Hairini Bridge, the
namesake Silver Birch trees mark out this park. The camp offce at the barrier arm entrance, incorporates an internet kiosk. Although many sites are taken
long-term, there are some casuals available on the water’s edge. If you choose
carefully you can almost fish from your tent! A small boat ramp is available.
Recreation opportunities include a free-form thermal swimming pool, TV/
games room and reading room. The amenities include a tidy centrally-placed
kitchen, well-equipped with modern appliances. The older ablutions have
been modernised and there is an automatic laundry and dump station. Your
hosts are Sharon and Tony .Tent sites are from $20 per person and powered

January period, it otherwise operates as a conference centre and wedding
venue for small to medium-sized groups. Check-in at the Ohope Beach Top
10 main offce. The central amenities block is divided by a pleasant breezeway.
There’s plenty of ‘everything you need’ in the kitchen and the laundry and the
ablutions are superb , all colour-coordinated with extra unisex showers (on
timers) and three disabled access suites.

A convenient base for the local attractions, you can camp in a peaceful spot

The smart kitchen is compact, with gas hobs and microwave cooking. The
