A great spot to ‘fritter’ away some time, this simple little holiday camp is on a
terrace above the beach and picturesque Mokau River mouth. You’ll find cosy
camping at the rear of the café on 20 immaculate, level, lawn sites - all enclosed
with sheltering trees. Your hosts at the Inn sell groceries, cabinet food and meals.
Some postal facilities are also available. The camp kitchen is roomy with plenty
of appliances, some cookware and crockery. A pleasant TV lounge has a stash of
reading material. Clean showers and toilets include a disabled access unit and
the laundry facilities have coin-operated washing machines. Hosts are Clare and
Dave. A powered site will cost $15 per person per night. Non powered sites
$10 per person.

Midway between Taumarunui and Stratford lies what the locals like to refer to
as the republic of Whangamomona (declared in 1988). The village is in the
remote heart of the Forgotten World Highway and has recently become a
destination for tourist travelling in modern railway carts on the old Stratford - Ohahukura
line. This simple campsite is in the old school grounds, with
camping on a paddock with a dividing hedge and some perimeter shade trees.
Being such a small place, the camp is close to the action (i.e. the village hotel!)

Turn off SHwy 4, just south of Owhango, into Oio Road. Part of the road is
winding and unsealed. This is a large, grassy site beside the Whanganui River.
Toilets, cold water tap and BBQ are provided.

Number of tent sites - 36. This is a large, flat, grassy site beside the river, and a good starting or mid point stop if undertaking the River Journey. There is a 10 bunk bunkroom and boat access nearby the campsite.

DESCRIPTION:

An 8 km drive through coastal dairy country from SHwy 3 at Waverly leads to
this pleasant rustic camp just over the dunes from the beach. Local attractions nearby are ‘Cave Rock’ and fishing. The 28 powered sites are on a grassy paddock edged with flaxes, leaving plenty of room for tents. To the rear of the camp is a great playground for the kids. The main building includes a
serviceable kitchen and a simple recreation/dining hall and there are outdoor wood BBQs. The older-style ablutions are tidy and kept locked when there are no guests.

The code to access facilities can be obtained from the Waverley LibraryPlus office 9 - 5 Monday to Friday and Saturdays 9.30am - 12pm where camp fees are also paid. $15 per night per powered site or $10 for tents (this covers 2 adults and 2 children on a site).

Just north of Urenui, look for the blue TransitNZ camp signs to the wellmanicured
seaside holiday village that marks the entrance to this camp. Right
beside the golf course and Urenui River mouth, this is a busy park with a choice
of attractive sites, some by the water’s edge, 133 with power and 30 or so for
tents. There’s a great playground for the kids, or enjoy the natural beauty of
the river and ocean. Takeaways are available at the on-site general store selling
all the necessary supplies. The two amenities blocks are simple but clean, with
key access to the showers. The kitchens offer a range of cooking options and
fridge/freezers and the laundries are well equipped. No dogs please. Your

DESCRIPTION:

On the historic Forgotten World Highway between Stratford and Taumarunui,
some 43 km inland of Stratford, is this outdoor adventure centre sited on what
was an old forestry camp. The camp is open for casual travellers depending
on whether there are school parties in residence, so it is wise to phone ahead
and check availability. Camping is in a wooded setting with a cluster of prime
sites near the road, including 16 with power. A modern amenities building has
a commercial kitchen, dining hall, lounge and laundry. Laundry costs $5 per
day. Two blocks of good ablutions are provided. Your hosts are Michelle and Jamie.
Prices are per person, tent and unpowered camper van $12.  Eftpos facility on site NO VISA

Facilities include free BBQ, laundry, obstacle course, flying fox, wet slide and firepit.

Escape to this. unsophisticated retreat located between Okaiawa and Kapuni,
around 12 km from SHwy 3 via Normanby. The historic site dating back to the
Taranaki land wars. Camping is on sheltered, wide-open grounds surrounded
by thick plantings. There are no powered sites. There is a token kitchen with
sink. Outside you will find picnic tables and children’s play equipment. A large
open porch with benches serves as a dining area. There are 3 toilets (one with
disabled access) and no showers. All services are somewhat “rustic”. Cold
water is on tap but no hot water. Gates may be locked at dusk. Fees of $5

The camp is traditional style and family friendly., Its river mouth locality offers a choice of freshwater and sea fishing, as well as whitebaiting. Or you can enjoy a long walk on the 3km stretch of beach between Awakino and Mokau Rivers. The camp has over 60 powered sites and plenty of room for tenting. Half an hour from Hawera, an attractive bush-reserve approach leads to this
beachside camp. Opunake is a traditional holiday spot, with the rest of the
sheltered bay housing the surf club and an artificial surf reef just offshore. Nearby activities include boating, surfcasting, swimming and water skiing.
The grounds are level grass, with 95 powered sites and 10 tent sites in a
ribbon layout. The amenities block has a kitchen with stoves, bench cooktops,

under shade sails. There is also a large paddling pool and lots of adventure

 A spectacular location, wrapped around the
sheltered Onaero River mouth and surrounded by bush. Its great outdoor
environment, along with limited cellphone coverage, means this is the
ideal spot to get away from it all! Just 11.5km north of Waitara, the
layout of the camp is very user-friendly, with 57 level power sites
and 30 tent sites scattered across well-manicured grounds. The pretty
beach is safe for swimming, has good fishing and whitebaiting and
views out to the offshore drilling rig on the horizon. Three kitchens
mean plenty of room for all and a small shop is onsite for snacks. The
amenities are excellent. The laundries have drying facilities and a
dump point is provided. There is a kids playground. . Your friendly

South-west of New Plymouth, turn towards the coast off SHwy 45 onto Wairau Road and follow the camp signs for 13 kms. This is true beachfront camping at Taranaki's most popular swimming, surfing and windsurfing beach. Breathtaking views with just about every site looking out to sea. The camp is in two parts, with sites in the lower camp spread across two levels, some with stunning views of the Tasman Sea and others in a sheltered valley. The upper part is on a quiet terraced area above the main camp and is surrounded by bush and native birds. The amenities are good, although usage can be high at peak times. A well-equipped, sparkling kitchen has plenty of bench space and modern appliances. A great alternative is the BBQ. There are roomy showers and all the bathroom extras. Automatic machines can be found in the laundry and a dump station is provided. Although there are 117 sites with power plus 60 for tents, pre-booking for summer is advised. camp has a perimeter of large shelter trees and the wide, open spaces of
Marine Park next door. There are a number of well established permanent
house buses and similar but travelling campers are accommodated in separate,

Kawhatau Base Access is now available via a 9.5 km walk up the Kawhatau River, starting where the Rangitane Road bridge crosses the Kawhatau River. Beware this route may not be accessible during times of high river flow. To get to the Rangitane Road bridge, head north from Mangaweka and turn right off SH1. Cross the Rangitikei River and follow Kawhatau Valley Road. This eventually leads to Upper Kawhatau Valley Road which becomes Rangitane Road. The bridge is just past the Smiths Road turn off. Please note there is no car park.

Kaupokonui is a beautiful unique setting with many original kiwi baches surrounding the campsite and lower reserve. It is a very family friendly place and well worth the trip. The campground boasts recently renovated cabins, 1 cabin sleeps up to 5 and a big family cabin that can sleep up to 7. There are also 26 powered sites and unpowered sites. At the top of the Tahora Saddle is a camp ground with fantastic views to the
Central Plateau including Mount Ruapehu. Use the camp as base to explore
the historic trails of the Forgotten World Highway. The campground has no
powered sites but is in a lovely bush setting with simple facilities of a long drop
toilet (with a view!) and a BBQ kitchen. Up near the house there are hard
standing powered sites and a high quality bathroom with hot shower which
can also be used by those camping on the lower area. of the campground.
There is a new outdoor covered kitchen. Your friendly hosts are Rob and
Annie. Unpowered sites are $12 per person, powered hardstand van sites, $25
for 2 people. Excellent rest point for cyclists. Please cash only.

DESCRIPTION:

Ashley Park is just south of Waitotara, between Patea and Whanganui, is this working farm complex offering a range of experiences for campers. Aside from the picturesque lake, gardens and walks, there is a swimming pool, tennis courts, mini-putt golf, bird aviaries and lots of friendly farm animals who like a scratch! An antique shop and cafe tea-shop invites you to linger. The 24 powered sites are densely hedged with camellias and rhododendrons. Unlimited tent sites are available around the park. The facilities are extensive and include a disabled access suite. A large dining room with log fire adjoins the well-equipped kitchen and you'll find a wood-fired BBQ too. A dump point is provided.
