Mangatutu Hot Springs is a popular camping, picnic and fishing spot, and a starting point for tramping, hunting or day walks up the Mohaka River and further into the Kaweka Forest Park. There are picnic tables and toilets located in secluded clearings among the manuka surrounds, and there are access tracks descending to the Mohaka River. The main feature here is the thermal springs. Thermal water issues from a deep, undercut, steaming hole on the top terrace. The water trickles down a riverside bluff and after a short way is channeled into two pools.

Campsite located in Whanganui National Park in the Manawatu/Whanganui region.
This is a boat-in only campsite on the Whanganui Journey. There is no drive on access. In this remote setting, you will be able to look and listen for kereru, tui and fantail, while brown kiwi can often be heard at night. The forest is a mix of rata, rewarewa, rimu, tawa and kowhai trees.

Mangaweka is halfway between Wellington and Taupo. Just north of the
township turn east onto Ruahine Road and travel 1 km to this great riverside camp. You will also fnd a small children’s playground and wood-fred BBQ’s. Facilities are simple and include cooking shelter with sinks and power outlets Flush toilets and hot water showers. A great spot for swimming, fshing, rafting and kayaking. Mangawhai Heads Holiday Park is right on the estuary. This camp is divided
in two by the entrance road. On the south side level sites are fairly open,
with a few trees. Up to 88 power sites and 111 tent sites. Good beachstyle
metred ablutions. A bright sunny kitchen has ceramic hobs, ovens, fridge
and plenty of bench space, but no inside dining. A good automatic laundry is
alongside. On the north side of the road is the camp office leading to a more
secluded setting, with some attractive sheltered spots for tenting and views
directly through the Heads to the ocean. Here there is an attractive play area,
a block of basic toilets and two showers that are handy. ($1 for 7 minutes)
This is a lovely coastal spot with a choice of camping amenities. The hosts here
are Richard and Noela Gunson. Power sites are $18 per adult, $8 per child

Just east of Whanarua Bay is relaxed, basic camping in a tranquil inlet right by
the sea. There is a large area for camping with many pleasant grassy campsites
under the pohutukawa trees beside the beach. Drums are provided for fres
on the beach. There are no power sites here and no kitchen. A total of 12
toilets and 8 hot showers all coin operated at $1 for a shower. You are able
to hire kayaks Take aways, refreshments and some provisions are available on

Tucked a little back from the beach, but with easy access, this mature and tidy
camp has a perimeter of large shelter trees and the wide, open spaces of
Marine Park next door. There are a number of well established permanent
house buses and similar but travelling campers are accommodated in separate,
uncluttered areas with tall, hedged borders and plenty of room to move. The
rustic outdoor wood-fired BBQ has some nice plantings and leads into the
serviceable and well-scrubbed kitchen. The ablutions are clean and well lit.
The laundry has coin-operated machines and a dump point is provided. Pets

Rustic outback camping, on the scenic west coast but not right on the beach. Travelling the sealed road from Waitomo Caves takes less than an hour, and meanders through some interesting countryside (check out the Natural Limestone Bridge, Piripiri Caves and Marakopa Falls). The camping paddock is ringed by mature trees, with towering hills behind and views to the estuary. Check in at the village shop (which has basic supplies) in the old school building at the camp entrance. This also houses the main amenities which include: a communal room with a pool table and TV, a kitchen with a covered dining/BBQ area, an automatic laundry and new ablutions block with unisex free showers (x6), toilets and basins. Another toilet block is provided at the other end of the camp. There are tennis courts free for campers use, and it is a reputed to be a fisherman's camp (complete with two wood smokers, outdoor cook-up area and fish-cleaning facilities). A great little friendly camp in vineyard country! The camp layout and new rustic-inspired amenities complex, complement the surrounding vines and village atmosphere. It is an easy walk to the numerous wineries, shops, caf_s and restaurants of the town centre and the town pool is right next door! Camp under the trees and enjoy the modern kitchen with gas BBQ, deck, lounge, laundry and shower block. Hire a bike to cruise the vineyards. Martins Bay Holiday Park is a picturesque, hidden gem located just one hour
north of central Auckland. Located on the water’s edge you have Kawau
Island and the sparkling Hauraki Gulf at your doorstep. Enjoy the beachfront
atmosphere, discover the excellent fishing spots, boating, sailing or swimming
or just dig your toes in the sand and relax. A fully secure boat parking area is
available. Plenty to keep you occupied here, including kayak hire, fishing, bush

Here is a special little camp with welcoming, helpful hosts. Set in 20 acres of land, the _business area_ occupies an elevated platform overlooking the Kaipara harbour on both sides. A track leads you down to the beach. The sites are gently terraced with each level offering private nooks surrounded by trees, and each has its own picnic table. There are 30 neat sites (some with individual lights). First class amenities are set in a colonial style building. The kitchen/lounge and dining area are lavishly equipped and stylish with a comfortable TV area. Free gas BBQ_s are available. An on-site store provides basics. Wireless and broadband internet are available. You can enjoy a game of Petanque, while, for the children, there is an adventure play area. Heading north from Matamata, (about 8 km) keep an eye out for the entrance
to the Matamata Aerodrome (and camp) on your right - just north of the
Ruangaiti marae. A popular camp spot for plane-spotters, the pleasant grounds
have some shady trees and unobstructed views of the runway and ranges.
There are around 40 powered sites and abundant tent sites, with room for
large vehicles to manoeuvre. The kitchen is generously proportioned and
comes with plenty of hot points, rangettes, a microwave and lots of fridge/
freezers. A covered porch/dining area commands a great view across the
aerodrome. The ablutions are bright and clean and double as the laundry. No
animals are allowed here. Skydiving and gliding are offered - although you’ll
need to ring the camp manager, ahead of time to arrange.

At the southern end of the town shops, look for the ‘Beach Access’ sign and
drive down a short, bumpy, gravel access road to this lovely beach reserve. In
a lovely setting between the sea and the lagoon, on slightly undulating land, is
this popular campground offering a very relaxed style of camping. There are 80
non powered sites, the wringer-plus-tub outdoor laundries are an adventure in
themselves. The single, metered, hot shower provides a central social spot (in
the queue!) on camp mornings, with the boiler being fed by paper from the
camp’s recycling programme. There are also flush toilets and basins for each
sex with 2 new toilets have been built.

This is a family campsite in a coastal setting with excellent fishing and swimming next to the Matatā wildlife refuge. No dogs are allowed.
Located in Matatā area in the Bay of Plenty region.
The vista of Matauri Bay spreads below you as you descend along a short
but winding road. The camp is outlined with Norfolk pines running into level
campsites at the northern end of the beach. A barrier arm entry system
operates. The seven days store/office has a liquor license and sells petrol,
diesel and LPG, along with general supplies. Dive bottle fills are also available.
The amenities block has a basic kitchen with plenty of sinks, communal fridge
and a full stove, extra hobs and two microwaves. Two BBQs with outdoor
seating, or visit the fish and chips kiosk in holiday time. There are plenty of
ablutions, curtained showers open to a communal dressing space. Washing
machines and dryers are in separate rooms. Campers have card access to the
amenities. At peak season this is a very busy camp. Your hosts are Maggie
and Brian Grimwood. Peak season prices are $24 per adult (minimum $48

On SHwy 2, halfway between Gisborne and Opotiki, youll find a pleasant
campsite in the heart of the tiny town of Matawai. Look carefully for the
grassy camp area opposite the public toilets. An ideal stopover spot, there is
plenty of all-weather parking and turning space for large vehicles, boaties and
horse floats in the sealed yard beside the camp. The camping area enjoys
lovely rural views and has trees on the perimeter and a creek at the rear. The
smart amenities include a small homely kitchen with stove, fridge and rustic
built-in timber table and seats, plus a couch and a covered verandah. Across
the road are a country pub, squash and tennis courts. Explore the Waioeka
Gorge from here or take the old narrow coach road (Motu Road) to Opotiki.
Trout fishing and mountain biking are also popular activities in this area. Your

Matiu/Somes Island Scientific and Historic Reserve is a tranquil retreat for wildlife and visitors alike. Maori have occupied this island for generations. In more recent times, Matiu/Somes Island has served as a human and animal quarantine station, an internment camp, and a military defence position. Thanks to the dedication of numerous individuals, groups and organisations, such as the Lower Hutt branch of Forest and Bird, Matiu/Somes Island Charitable Trust, Friends of Matiu/Somes and Eastbourne Forest Rangers, Matiu/Somes Island once again represents a refuge, this time for wildlife and our cultural heritage.
Mawley Park, at the northern end of Masterton, occupies an attractive location
on the banks of the Waipoua River (with good swimming holes). The 15 acre,
sheltered grounds are tidy with large trees and plenty of space for the 200
or so tent sites and 54 powered sites. A BBQ shelter has cooking facillities.
The camping areas are grouped in separate sections with sealed road access
and brand new unisex individual ablutions serving each area (these include
disabled access facilities). The park has had a major refurbishment with a lot
of thought been put into what makes a place nice. There’s a large dining hall
with highchairs, a TV and a separate comfortable and modern TV lounge. The
kitchen has gas hobs and is very modern and well equipped. A supermarket
is nearby and QE11 Park is across the road for the kids, whilst there are also a
few small pieces of play equipment to keep the kids amused onsite. A DVD
Library and local information is available at the office. Free washing machines

Number of tent sites - 70 Surrounded by a mix of farmland, holiday homes and sand dunes, the campsite is sheltered and overlooks a tidal stream. The estuary is safe for swimming and the beautiful beach is popular for surfing. Vehicle access to launch boats for fishing. This is a privately owned campground. Look for the sign at the gate. This rustic camping ground with large trees and level sites is a peaceful place to be with the kaka birds to entertain you. There are lots of old cars down the back of the paddock and to the right you will find the very basic facilities. A wood-burner provides hot water for showers
and taps. There are flush toilets. The cookhouse has a coal range and a sink
providing rain water. There is a wet weather shelter if needed. Your host is

At the top end of Kaikohe beside the RSA the Motor Inn has a camping
area to one side. There are 10 power sites and numerous tent sites with
just a toilet, free shower and a small kitchen. A laundry has auto machines.

the bar and restaurant next door. Very handy to the Kauri Coast or take a

A small, sheltered riverside campground between Wairoa and Gisborne on the
main coast road. Camp amongst the trees in a delightful landscaped, garden
setting, with room for 19 tents. There are no powered sites. The tearooms
are alongside and meals are available until 8pm (in summer). Across the road
are the Morere Hot Springs, with hot mineral pools and a scenic reserve. The
cosy, split-level camp kitchen is well-appointed, with small appliances, microwave
and fridge or use the outdoor BBQ area. Compact toilet and shower facilities
are available along with a small laundry. Enjoy a game of petanque on the
court beside the café garden. Wendy Swan and Trevor Steed will give you a

The Motuihe campsite is divided into five different areas, or 'pods': Confidence Site (3 tent sites), on the western side of the sealed road, 25m uphill from the toilet block. Parade Ground (28 tent sites), on the headland above wharf road. Follow the timber box steps 100m west of the toilet block. Captain Camping (8 tent sites), located at the end of the sealed road, uphill and to the left (325m). Puriri Ridge (5 tent sites), south of the sealed road amongst the puriri trees. Go uphill and around to the left (250m). Range Site (5 tent sites), south of the water tank tower. Go left off the sealed road (375m).
Deanna have put a lot of work into making this camp something a bit special. Not content with run of the mill, they have made the upgrades quirky and memorable. The modernised amenities are lovely and clean, have key-pad access, good free showers, and facilities for the disabled. The kitchen includes a TV as well as all the appliances you need, and for a small charge crockery is also available. A nice undercover area behind the kitchen is where the BBQs and outdoor dining are situated. There is a well stocked shop in the reception area, a short walk to the renowned Liquorice Cafe, and only 15 minutes from the relaxing Tokaanu hot pools. Pets are by arrangement only. A magical spot this is ‘real Kiwi camping’. The camp stretches over a promontory
and gives access across two beaches. One cliff has sites with spectacular views,
with access right down to the water in the second bay. You will be spoiled for
choice here; take your pick, sea view, green valley or beachside. Many sites are
hewn from the hillside where you will be quite a distance from your neighbour.
This camp is a working farm so please leave your dog at home. You will need
to be self-sufficient as there are just cold water showers, but numerous taps
and pit toilets are dotted around. There is no power, but freezer space may
be hired in the building near the entrance which also has a recharge centre for
all those gadgets. No fires are allowed, use gas only.
Your hosts, the Barron family live at the camp entrance. Charges for adults are $15 and for children
(5 to14 years) $7 with a minimum site charge of $30 in peak season.
Halfway between Taupo and Turangi, you will fnd one of the most scenic
camps around. Stretching along the shores of Lake Taupo is this popular, largecapacity camp with around 267 sites. The lakeside sites have ready water
access, shady kowhai trees and are handy to the boat ramp, ideal for watersporting families. Across the road, the camp stretches up a sheltered valley
with sites grouped on several levels that offer maximum privacy and lake
views. All the amenities are spotlessly clean, smart and well-equipped, with
four kitchens, three laundries and four ablution blocks (with metered showers
and disabled access). Other amenities include a dump point, fsh cleaning areas,
boat storage and well stocked camp store with fshing supplies. Your hosts are

A windswept rugged coastline stretching 50 km north makes Muriwai one
of New Zealand’s most spectacular black sand surf beaches. At its southern
end, Otakamiro Point is the site of one of this country’s few mainland gannet
breeding colonies. The headland and offshore islands are also home to white
fronted terns (tara), blue penguins and fur seals (kekeno). Heading west from
Auckland, the turn off to Murwai is just past the township of Waimauku. The
camp is at the end of the road to Muriwai Beach. There is a café near the camp
entrance and a general store further up the road. The camp is run by a private
operator. There are 68 power sites and over 100 sites for tents. Dump points
are provided for vans. There are reasonable kitchen and laundry facilities, hot
showers and flushing toilets. Power sites are $28 per night includes 2 people.
Camp rates are $14 per adult, $7 per child and preschool are free.
3 km west of Matata township, turn off over the railway crossing to an
attractive seaside site with plenty of shelter. This camp has room for casual

the ablution blocks has another little kitchenette attached. The laundry has
automatic washing machines and dryers. A book exchange operates at the

Heading east into Murupara on the main road, look for the Motor Camp sign
on your left just after the bridge. 29 powered sites and 32 non-powered
sites are set in 7 hectares of large trees. The hot showers are free as is the
Wi-Fi. There is a well equipped kitchen. Washing machine and dryer cost $2
each. Visit the Te Urewera National Park. This is a base camp for rafting the
Rangitaiki and is close to the Golf course. Your host is Daniel. Tent sites are

Napier Beach Kiwi Holiday Park & Motels is thoughtful landscaping and decorative touches give this beachfront camp a welcoming appearance. Cross the railway line (not in use) and drop into a true seaside environment with pohutakawa trees, sea breezes and the roar of the waves. There are 120 sites, spread across several levels. 60 have power and some enjoy lovely panoramic ocean views from where you can sight the occasional dolphin pod. Narrows Park is a charitable trust, administered by staff and governed by the
Narrows Park Ministry Trust. This relaxed camp is set in picturesque rural
grounds, 10 minutes drive south of Hamilton and used mainly by groups.
Casual campers, looking for a peaceful spot, are welcome on the 25 powered
sites scattered about the rolling grounds. Groves of shady Acacia trees ring
the perimeter and tent sites are plentiful. The basic camper’s kitchen has a
stove and a refrigerator. The two well-scrubbed blocks of ablutions have free
showers and a disabled access toilet. The laundry has an automatic washer
and dryer. The camp offers a swimming pool. Al Belcher is the director,
office staff host, they would prefer you to ring in advance to check availability.

Non-powered sites are $22 per person per night and powered sites are $24 per person per night.
An inviting inner-city camp, compact and quiet with 30 sheltered sites in

Camp near a stream, beside lush forest. Walk the Totara track and to the Forest Tower. Scenic drives or biking, tramping and hunting. Look out for native wildlife such as kākā, kōkako, kākāriki and short-tailed bats.

At the junction, 6km north of Kaitaia, A boutique park within a motel complex
with a pretty and private camping area at the rear of the Motel. The entrance
is around a manicured lawn. There are 12 sites with power and 2 without,
neatly placed between privacy hedges. At the front of this is a heated pool
and BBQ. A brand new ablution building with spacious showers (including
a disabled facility) and a fully equipped laundry are the facilities provided. A
playground with swings, slide and sandpit will keep the children happy. Wifi

South-west of New Plymouth, turn towards the coast off SHwy 45 onto Wairau Road and follow the camp signs for 13 kms. This is true beachfront camping at Taranaki's most popular swimming, surfing and windsurfing beach. Breathtaking views with just about every site looking out to sea. The camp is in two parts, with sites in the lower camp spread across two levels, some with stunning views of the Tasman Sea and others in a sheltered valley. The upper part is on a quiet terraced area above the main camp and is surrounded by bush and native birds. The amenities are good, although usage can be high at peak times. A well-equipped, sparkling kitchen has plenty of bench space and modern appliances. A great alternative is the BBQ. There are roomy showers and all the bathroom extras. Automatic machines can be found in the laundry and a dump station is provided. Although there are 117 sites with power plus 60 for tents, pre-booking for summer is advised. The office is located over the road from the camp and there are a selection of books, games and tennis rackets available also. Your hosts are Al and Jan. The gateway to Paradise, 6km north of Coromandel, this camp is set against a backdrop of bush-clad hills with a beautiful swimming beach just across the road. Permanent _weekenders_ dominate the camp but a few powered sites are available for casual campers plus there are plenty of tent sites. Boat parking may be available.
