Pouto Road, Dargaville, Northland, North Island

DESCRIPTION:

67 km from Dargaville with 10km of good gravel road, Pouto Point is at the
end of the road, but well worth the trip. Peaceful camping with 8 power
points, on a flat grassed area that has commanding views over the outer
Kaipara Harbour. Here you can watch the sunrise, go swimming, kayaking
and fishing or, for landlubbers, hire a quad and explore the thousands of acres
of sand dunes. Guided sand safaris are run from the camp. Facilities are
in the restored 1879 kauri building, which was New Zealand’s first Custom
House. A common room with tables, TV and stereo, plus a well-equipped
clean kitchen that has everything you will need. There are very modern
clean showers with hot water cost a $1 for 2 minutes. Laundry is $3 per load. New compositing
flush toilets have recently been installed. No shopping, fuel or Eftpos here,
so come prepared. For intrepid 4 wheel drivers, enquire from John how you
can get away from civilization along the 100 km of pristine beach at low tide.
Your hosts Janeen and Robin in the house next door will make you very welcome.

DESCRIPTION:

A magical spot this is ‘real Kiwi camping’. The camp stretches over a promontory
and gives access across two beaches. One cliff has sites with spectacular views,
with access right down to the water in the second bay. You will be spoiled for
choice here; take your pick, sea view, green valley or beachside. Many sites are
hewn from the hillside where you will be quite a distance from your neighbour.
This camp is a working farm so please leave your dog at home. You will need
to be self-sufficient as there are just cold water showers, but numerous taps
and pit toilets are dotted around. There is no power, but freezer space may
be hired in the building near the entrance which also has a recharge centre for
all those gadgets. No fires are allowed, use gas only.

Your hosts, the Barron family live at the camp entrance. Charges for adults are $15 and for children
(5 to14 years) $7 with a minimum site charge of $30 in peak season.
