Along the Milford Road (between Te Anau and The Divide) you can stay at one of ten DOC camping areas. These are in picturesque spots beside bush, rivers and lakes, often with opportunities for bush walks or trout fishing nearby. Most have fire places, picnic tables, toilets and access to river water, and are very reasonably priced (take cash for self registration). Please note that freedom camping (within 200m of the road) is not allowed on the Milford Road.

Milford Lodge is surrounded by huge mountains and a fast-flowing river and is only minutes from the Milford Sound boat cruise departure point.

There are 20 sites available for caravans or campervans only, please ring ahead during the peak season to avoid missing out. Cook for yourself in the brand new kitchen and dining facility, or you can enjoy a drink and a great
meal at the café. The dining and recreation area is large and comfortable, there are unisex ablutions, and a laundry. As this is a national park, pets are not permitted. The local wildlife includes keas and voracious sandflies. Storage facilities for campers are provided at the Lodge free of charge, and you can book a variety of trips from here. Please note we have a strict no tenting policy.

This is a secluded, back to nature bush site around 6km from Wanaka, you will find it off Aubrey Road. A myriad of landscaped camping sites are scattered amongst the manuka shrubbery, with tracks to the lake. Choose your site in the sun or shade, and look at the breath taking views of the mountains and lake. Right on the source of the Clutha, this is a special place for fishing so there is a boat ramp, in the office is a small shop and assistance for booking local activities and forward accommodation. The amenities are sturdy and spotless and the kitchen clean with good equipment, outside dining, and barbecues. The ablutions are not numerous but are well presented and extra toilets are scattered around the grounds. Showers are coin operated, $1 for five minutes of hot water. A corridor laundry has automatic washers and a dryer. The natural bush makes for a great children_s playground, and Internet access is available. Open all year round, come and hire a bike and have a look around. Running this camp are Glenn and Tracy. Sites are $16 per adult and $8 per child. Powered sites are $5 extra per site.

Cameron Flat  Camp is near the Makarora River. Plenty of great activities are available nearby such as hunting, tramping or fishing. Beautiful environment.

Boundary Creek Camping

Relax on the shores of Lake Wanaka at this easily accessible and quiet campsite. Water sports include motor boating, skiing and fishing. Walks lead from the campsite around the lake.

Kidds Bush Camping Area Number of tent sites - 40 Camp lakeside in a large grassy area with good shade from mountain beech trees. Walk around the lake, go fishing or swimming.

Right on the edge of Lake Hawea, this is a large camping ground with sites
scattered amongst large established shade trees. There are 100 sites with
power and plenty of tent site, this camp is a great place to view the sunset with
the light shining on the mountains over the lake, which offers a stunning natural
show. The office carries basic supplies and information on all the activities in the area, and there is a big fire place to socialise around. wo basic but clean kitchens with all amenities, one with a TV, also internet access, and free DVD
hire. Two basic, clean ablution blocks and a disability unit, recently painted and
modernised. The shower and toilet block is tidy, and showers are included in
the price. The laundry has automatic equipment and linen to hire, and there is a boat ramp. You can use the camp fishing rods, fish cleaning facilities, plus a fish smoker is provided for your catch. Plenty of activities for children, with a
playground that includes a couple of old tractors, and safe swimming in the lake.
Dogs can stay off-peak (end of January to December 20) and there is 30 mins
free wifi for guests, or you can purchase a 24 hour card. Your hosts are the
Burdon family. Tent sites $17 per adult and power sites from $36 for two adults.

This self-registration campsite is located near the Clutha River, a few kilometres
from Wanaka. It is popular with summer holidaymakers and strategically placed for
day trips to Mount Aspiring National Park (via Matukituki Valley or Makarora) and
the Queenstown/Arrowtown region. Toilets, taps, rubbish bins and picnic tables
are provided. Price per adult is $7, 15 and under $3.50, children under 5 are free.

From this large camping complex, you can walk to Wanaka township, and
just see the lake through the trees. Over 200 sites are placed underneath
large pine trees, and some weeping willows, and some are in the open.
While the main amenities block has a large kitchen with plenty of cooking
appliances, a fridge and TV, there is also space to socialise while fixing dinner.
There are showers in the ablution blocks and the well-equipped laundry
has banks of automatic machines and a drying room. Extra amenities are
available at peak times. There is a playground and ‘safe swimming down at
the lake, and squash/tennis courts next door. The public dump station is
at the front gate, and your host is Aggi Sanders. All sites $19 per person.

This holiday park with its lovely mountain views and glorious sunsets has
approximately 40 sites amongst tree-lined and sheltered hedges. The
facilities are modern and sparkling, and one of the ablution blocks is ‘5 star’
style, with underfloor heating and other luxurious extra. There is a spa
, sauna, fitness centre and playground here.  A courtesy vintage car pickup
may be available from local restaurants and you can book at the office
for local trips and attractions. The Upukerora River is 250 metres away
where you can go swimming, fishing and kayaking, pets are welcome by arrangement
so please call first. Your friendly hosts are the Saunders
family. Unpowered sites are from $18 per person, and $20 for powered.
