On SHwy 2, halfway between Gisborne and Opotiki, youll find a pleasant
campsite in the heart of the tiny town of Matawai. Look carefully for the
grassy camp area opposite the public toilets. An ideal stopover spot, there is
plenty of all-weather parking and turning space for large vehicles, boaties and
horse floats in the sealed yard beside the camp. The camping area enjoys
lovely rural views and has trees on the perimeter and a creek at the rear. The
smart amenities include a small homely kitchen with stove, fridge and rustic
built-in timber table and seats, plus a couch and a covered verandah. Across
the road are a country pub, squash and tennis courts. Explore the Waioeka
Gorge from here or take the old narrow coach road (Motu Road) to Opotiki.
Trout fishing and mountain biking are also popular activities in this area. Your
friendly hosts, ask you to book in advance. Tent sites are $15 per

Mawley Park, at the northern end of Masterton, occupies an attractive location
on the banks of the Waipoua River (with good swimming holes). The 15 acre,
sheltered grounds are tidy with large trees and plenty of space for the 200
or so tent sites and 54 powered sites. A BBQ shelter has cooking facillities.
The camping areas are grouped in separate sections with sealed road access
and brand new unisex individual ablutions serving each area (these include
disabled access facilities). The park has had a major refurbishment with a lot
of thought been put into what makes a place nice. There’s a large dining hall
with highchairs, a TV and a separate comfortable and modern TV lounge. The
kitchen has gas hobs and is very modern and well equipped. A supermarket
is nearby and QE11 Park is across the road for the kids, whilst there are also a
few small pieces of play equipment to keep the kids amused onsite. A DVD
Library and local information is available at the office. Free washing machines
and $2 dryer are part of the laundry. A dump station is provided. Powered sites $38 for 2, unpowered $36 for 2. Your friendly and enthusiastic hosts are

Next to the local A&P Showgrounds, this well maintained camping ground is laid out on open grounds with many large shade trees. Plenty of level sites with a choice of grass or gravel. In the amenities pavilion is a large, well-presented, functional kitchen with full stoves, next door is a TV and dining room with a cosy log fire. In addition there is a very large games room where you can play on one of the arcade games, have a game of pool or table tennis, even table hockey. Comfy sofas to sit on and several more dining tables in here too, or go outside for a game of lawn tennis. Internet is available, the tidy ablutions have metered showers, and the laundry has automatic equipment. A variety of shops are in the village within walking distance, you might want to have a go at hot air ballooning or take a trip to the snow at Mt. Hutt ski field, all of which you can do from here. This is a privately owned campground. Look for the sign at the gate. This rustic camping ground with large trees and level sites is a peaceful place to be with the kaka birds to entertain you. There are lots of old cars down the back of the paddock and to the right you will find the very basic facilities. A wood-burner provides hot water for showers
and taps. There are flush toilets. The cookhouse has a coal range and a sink
providing rain water. There is a wet weather shelter if needed. Your host is
Mickey O’Shea. Camping here will cost you $7 per person.

Just 8 km south of Whitianga, turn off the State Highway and drive 3.5 km of easy gravel road to this rustic country holiday and animal park. Watch for the signs and enter at the caf_ and office. Formerly known as the Hampden Beach Camp Ground.

In the settlement of Hampden, just south of Moeraki, is this beach and river
side camping ground. There are plenty of sites to choose from, and in the
busy season additional sites across the road are opened. The grounds are
pleasant with some shady trees with a fully equipped kitchen that features
visitor comments as wallpaper. Wireless internet and TV are available in the newly built lounge area, and a trampoline, outdoor games, bikes and kayak hire will keep the children busy. Nearby is a small children’s playground, tennis court and a skate park, this is great for family camping holidays. An ablution block with toilets and showers and a separate toilet block are provided, a large disability suite is available, and small children are not neglected here with a highchair and a child’s hub. There is a laundry with automatic equipment and everything has been recently painted and is clean and tidy. Free pick up from the bus stop at Hampden, and you might like to try the famous fish and chips at Hampden. Your hosts are Alex and Mel.

This is a pretty camp on the edge of a fishing harbour in Moeraki Village where fishing boats bobbing lazily in the bay present a picture postcard view. There are a number of camping pockets, many overlooking the bay, set on terraced sections. Brand new toilets and showers have a disabled suite, and everything is clean and tidy. The kitchen has everything you need, including an outside eating area and BBQ, and there is a TV room available. Take time to inspect the Moeraki Boulders and the nearby seal colony or visit the penguin hospital, this may be the place to land that blue cod. There are 30 sites with power plus 27 tent sites, and dogs are welcome on a lead. Your hosts are Kristina and Robbie Mitchell.

An oldie but a goodie as the saying goes. Stop in at the office on the way down to the domain camp, you will pass it on your way in to this spot on the edge of the sea, and at the heart of the Mokihinui community. With plenty of level land, either on the sports field or beside the beach, this camp has a tavern near the entrance and the sea over the bank at the back where there is excellent fishing, and whitebaiting in the river. Some old trees make this a lovely picnic area. Around the playing field are 21 sites, which have power and taps, the main amenities are a central kitchen with three full stoves, fridge, tables and chairs. The main ablution block has clean tiled showers and toilets, with another block of toilets available in the busy season, and there are automatic machines in the laundry. Added extras include a herb garden and book exchange, and your friendly hosts, Joan and Basil, invite you to participate in the yearly Xmas fishing competition, or come and put your torpedo out at any time. Tent sites from $8 for one and $2 for children under 12 years. Power sites from $20 for two and $2 for children under 12 years.

The Momorangi Bay camp is found in picturesque Queen Charlotte Sound, just
25 minutes drive from Picton. Its sheltered location at the top of Grove Arm is
great for boating, swimming, walking and picnicking. It is accessible by a sealed
road from Picton and Blenheim, or turn off on to Queen Charlotte Drive if
travelling from Nelson. No pets please. New clean amenities (including some
for disabled people). Lovely new beach front kitchen/laundry/showers block.
The kitchen, although small is clean and has all amenities. 80 power and 80
tent sites are on sheltered terraces with attractive picnic tables. A boat ramp
is available across the road. The Manager is available in the shop throughout
the summer months, and most days during the winter. Price for all sites is $15
per adult, child $7.50.

A small, sheltered riverside campground between Wairoa and Gisborne on the
main coast road. Camp amongst the trees in a delightful landscaped, garden
setting, with room for 19 tents. There are no powered sites. The tearooms
are alongside and meals are available until 8pm (in summer). Across the road
are the Morere Hot Springs, with hot mineral pools and a scenic reserve. The
cosy, split-level camp kitchen is well-appointed, with small appliances, microwave
and fridge or use the outdoor BBQ area. Compact toilet and shower facilities
are available along with a small laundry. Enjoy a game of petanque on the
court beside the café garden. Wendy Swan and Trevor Steed will give you a
warm welcome. All sites are from $18 per person.

This local Memorial Park looks out over pleasant grounds, but has a lot of
permanent occupants so bookings are essential. There is a small area for
campers with just 18 powered sites on metal/sealed paving. The kitchen is

individual LPG water heating. There is a free laundry with automatic washer,
dryer and a freezer, and showers are free too. The council swimming pool is in the park next door, and your on-site host is Tom Bell. Single person powered

Motunau is a lovely beachside settlement, with a river opening to the sea. Not
right on the beach but at the river mouth, this camping area has pleasant open
areas with shady trees. Only flush toilets and water here, just turn up and put
your payment in the honesty box if no one is around as there are no bookings.

Deanna have put a lot of work into making this camp something a bit special. Not content with run of the mill, they have made the upgrades quirky and memorable. The modernised amenities are lovely and clean, have key-pad access, good free showers, and facilities for the disabled. The kitchen includes a TV as well as all the appliances you need, and for a small charge crockery is also available. A nice undercover area behind the kitchen is where the BBQs and outdoor dining are situated. There is a well stocked shop in the reception area, a short walk to the renowned Liquorice Cafe, and only 15 minutes from the relaxing Tokaanu hot pools. Pets are by arrangement only. DESCRIPTION:

A magical spot this is ‘real Kiwi camping’. The camp stretches over a promontory
and gives access across two beaches. One cliff has sites with spectacular views,
with access right down to the water in the second bay. You will be spoiled for
choice here; take your pick, sea view, green valley or beachside. Many sites are
hewn from the hillside where you will be quite a distance from your neighbour.
This camp is a working farm so please leave your dog at home. You will need
to be self-sufficient as there are just cold water showers, but numerous taps
and pit toilets are dotted around. There is no power, but freezer space may
be hired in the building near the entrance which also has a recharge centre for
all those gadgets. No fires are allowed, use gas only.

Your hosts, the Barron family live at the camp entrance. Charges for adults are $15 and for children
(5 to14 years) $7 with a minimum site charge of $30 in peak season.

Right in the heart of one of New Zealand’s favorite summer holiday
destinations and in a prime location at the base of the Mount, lies this attractive
park complex. Hot salt-water pools are right at the entrance, ocean or
harbour water activities surround you and it’s a short stroll back from the
main beachfront boutique and cafÉ/bar precinct. Campers can choose from 3
separate terraced camping areas, each with its own spectacular views. Watch
the cruise ships enter the Port, kids playing on the white sandy surf beach or
soak up the soothing Bay of Plenty ocean views. The fully-modernised facilities
are superb and provide everything a camper needs, including a dump station
and thoughtful amenities for those camping with disabilities. In the popular
‘Ocean’ camp area, the new facilities block boasts a super-modern kitchen and
outdoor dining/BBQ area with sea views. Mark and the team will help you
relax and enjoy all the activities of the area. A minimum site charge applies:
$37 off-peak (for 1 to 2 adults) and bookings are essential in peak season.
Campers are asked not to bring pets. There is a Visitor information centre
onsite.

DESCRIPTION:

Although this is some 50km from Queenstown, the sealed road takes in some
great alpine scenery. The park is at the head of Lake Wakatipu with an outlook to
the majestic Southern Alps, it is virtually the entrance to Fiordland. Undergoing
a huge redevelopment, the camp is currently offering limited camping facilities,
but even these sound pretty good. There are 34 sites, a laundry, kitchen, showers
and a children’s playground. Your host is Andrew and a site will cost you $30 for
two, extras $15 each. This camp will be closed from 28 March until November

DESCRIPTION:

Sited in the attractive domain gardens, there are many trees for shelter and picnic tables. Sturdy clean toilets and metered showers (two 50c coins for 4 minutes) are available. A basic kitchen, dining and lounge area has a stove, hot water, fridge/freezer and auto washing machine, all recently upgraded due to snow damage. A dump point is available, and an adventure tower and tennis courts are nearby. A great place to relax or enjoy the Mt. Somers walkway, explore the historic coalmines, fish, swim or water ski in the nearby lakes, or have a drink at the pub across the road. The friendly off site caretaker is Wendy Cullen. Prices are for the site, not per person.

DESCRIPTION:

Located 8km north of Murchison, this beautifully landscaped camp borders
the Buller river. All hard stands with good sized sites for buses and a level
grassed camping area for tents down by the river where you will not be
crowded. A modern central facilities block has a wraparound veranda for
outside seating, and includes a kitchen and dining area with TV, hob, microwave
cooking, all utensils and cutlery. The ablutions have good showers and toilets
with a disability/family suite and a laundry with auto machines. All amenities
are modern, clean and tidy, there are BBQs here and a dump point too for
quests only. Enjoy a dip in the river or try your hand at fishing, rafting, kayaking
or explore the bike trails and walking tracks in the area. Relax and have a
game of petanque or pavement draughts, there is also a chip and putt course,
volleyball, and croquet available. Your host is Karen Steadman, who also
provides seasonal veges and free range eggs from the office.

DESCRIPTION:

A windswept rugged coastline stretching 50 km north makes Muriwai one
of New Zealand’s most spectacular black sand surf beaches. At its southern
end, Otakamiro Point is the site of one of this country’s few mainland gannet
breeding colonies. The headland and offshore islands are also home to white
fronted terns (tara), blue penguins and fur seals (kekeno). Heading west from
Auckland, the turn off to Murwai is just past the township of Waimauku. The
camp is at the end of the road to Muriwai Beach. There is a café near the camp
entrance and a general store further up the road. The camp is run by a private
operator. There are 68 power sites and over 100 sites for tents. Dump points
are provided for vans. There are reasonable kitchen and laundry facilities, hot
showers and flushing toilets. Power sites are $28 per night includes 2 people.
Camp rates are $14 per adult, $7 per child and preschool are free.

DESCRIPTION:

3 km west of Matata township, turn off over the railway crossing to an
attractive seaside site with plenty of shelter. This camp has room for casual
campers amongst the colourful long-term ‘weekenders’ in residence which give
the camp a real beachy feel. The land has a rolling contour and a choice of
shady or sunny sites, plus a kids’ play area and gas BBQs. Tidy amenities include
two kitchens, one with dining space, a fridge/freezers, stoves and microwave.
Two ablution blocks are provided, along with a disabled access suite. One of
the ablution blocks has another little kitchenette attached. The laundry has
automatic washing machines and dryers. A book exchange operates at the
office. Shane and Rebecca will accept pets by arrangement, they must be on
leads at all times. Tent sites are $16 per person and powered sites $18.

DESCRIPTION:

Narrows Park is a charitable trust, administered by staff and governed by the
Narrows Park Ministry Trust. This relaxed camp is set in picturesque rural
grounds, 10 minutes drive south of Hamilton and used mainly by groups.
Casual campers, looking for a peaceful spot, are welcome on the 25 powered
sites scattered about the rolling grounds. Groves of shady Acacia trees ring
the perimeter and tent sites are plentiful. The basic camper’s kitchen has a
stove and a refrigerator. The two well-scrubbed blocks of ablutions have free
showers and a disabled access toilet. The laundry has an automatic washer
and dryer. The camp offers a swimming pool. Al Belcher is the director,
office staff host, they would prefer you to ring in advance to check availability.
Eftpos and credit card facilities are available.

Non-powered sites are $22 per person per night and powered sites are $24

What a wonderful family holiday park this one is. With campsites
hidden in the larches, there are 48 powered sites and innumerable tent
sites. The renovated kitchen/living room has double glazing, a cosy
log burner for the winter months, and all the amenities needed. During
busy times, a secondary kitchen is also available. Laundry and drying
facilities and the roomy ablutions are bright and clean. Make sure you
bring your bikes, as there are extensive mountain bike trails all
around the camp, as well as an adventure playground and a swimming
dam, in the summer months, within metres of the edge of the park. The
historic gold-mining town of Naseby has many attractions such as year
round curling, and great pubs and a cafe, and It is also not far to
the Central Otago Rail Trail. The camp is open all year round, dogs

A good kitchen has all appliances with an adjacent outside dining area and BBQ. A card phone, comfortable TV room with Sky and internet area are here for your enjoyment. The excellent ablutions have good free showers and a complete disability/family suite is also available. The laundry has plenty of equipment including auto washers, dryers and iron.
