This lake front camp is run by a Christian organization and is used primarily
for groups but we have been assured that there is plenty of room for casual
camping all year round. A lovely setting and plenty to do, with a swimming
pool, kayaks, glow worms, a water slide, eeling/fishing and a boat ramp, spread
over 12 acres. A large hall, and a BBQ can be hired. The showers are free

An enjoyable suburban motor camp, thoughtfully laid-out in a u-shape, but without the glitz of some of the bigger urban camps. You can relax under avenues of shady trees, on box-hedged, sheltered sites that lie well to the sun. 38 sites have power, most have taps and there is plenty of room for tents. An awesome double-storey playhouse and slide will be a hit with the kids. There is a compact kitchen with fridge/freezer, gas stoves and hobs and a selection of small appliances. The modern ablutions have roomy, free showers and two separate disabled access/family bathroom suites. Extras include a drinks vending machine and TV lounge, along with an internet kiosk. An automatic laundry (with soap vending machine) and a dump station is provided. As this is a busy urban camp, it is wise to pre-book all year round.

As you pass through Huntly, look for the TransitNZ camp signs on the northern outskirts. Nestled on the shores of Lake Hakanoa (not suitable for swimming), lies a delightful small camp, hidden away from the passing traffic. On the grassy banks overlooking the lake are 49 sites with power and plenty of room for tents. Well-groomed and level, they come with their own friendly Pukeko who live in the lake-edge wetlands. A nearby domain offers pleasant gardens, the town swimming pool and an excellent playground for children. Enjoy a loop walk round the lake to the ‘Green Cathedral’. The amenities are immaculate and have free showers. The kitchen has plenty of bench space, cooking appliances and some crockery and cutlery. An automatic laundry and dump point are provided. The camp can accommodate large vehicles. Your friendly hosts are Carol and Dave Franks.

Situated on a farm, 1 km east of Waitomo village, this backpackers hostel offers
convenient camping around it’s pleasant, elevated grounds. There are some
stunning campsites (4 with power), with great views out over the Waitomo
Valley. All the facilities, including internet access, are in the lodge. Designed
to capture the views and the sun, the lodge has a wrap-around deck with BBQ
and outdoor dining space or dine alfresco using one of the timber-slab picnic
tables dotted around the grounds. There is a swimming pool, tennis court,
basketball court, and a very relaxed atmosphere - with various farm animals

From the town centre, follow the signs to the boat ramp at Karewa Beach and
you’ll spot this camp on the way. The closest camp to the hotwater beach
springs (4 km away) you can borrow a spade to create your personal ‘beach
spa’. The grounds are pleasantly landscaped with level lawn sites backing onto
avenues of willow trees. There are 14 powered sites available for travellers.
The kitchen is light and airy with microwave, full stove, hobs, fridge and freezer
and an outdoor dining nook. In the ablutions block the free showers have
been modernised and a new disabled access/family suite is provided. There is
a porch-style automatic laundry. A fish cleaning area and fish smoker are here.

Rustic outback camping, on the scenic west coast but not right on the beach. Travelling the sealed road from Waitomo Caves takes less than an hour, and meanders through some interesting countryside (check out the Natural Limestone Bridge, Piripiri Caves and Marakopa Falls). The camping paddock is ringed by mature trees, with towering hills behind and views to the estuary. Check in at the village shop (which has basic supplies) in the old school building at the camp entrance. This also houses the main amenities which include: a communal room with a pool table and TV, a kitchen with a covered dining/BBQ area, an automatic laundry and new ablutions block with unisex free showers (x6), toilets and basins. Another toilet block is provided at the other end of the camp. There are tennis courts free for campers use, and it is a reputed to be a fisherman's camp (complete with two wood smokers, outdoor cook-up area and fish-cleaning facilities). Your cellphone will likely be out of range, vodafone and free wi fi hot spot is outside the shop. Fill-up before you head away to this camp as there is nowhere to refuel here. Heading north from Matamata, (about 8 km) keep an eye out for the entrance
to the Matamata Aerodrome (and camp) on your right - just north of the
Ruangaiti marae. A popular camp spot for plane-spotters, the pleasant grounds
have some shady trees and unobstructed views of the runway and ranges.
There are around 40 powered sites and abundant tent sites, with room for
large vehicles to manoeuvre. The kitchen is generously proportioned and
comes with plenty of hot points, rangettes, a microwave and lots of fridge/
freezers. A covered porch/dining area commands a great view across the
aerodrome. The ablutions are bright and clean and double as the laundry. No
animals are allowed here. Skydiving and gliding are offered - although you’ll
need to ring the camp manager, ahead of time to arrange.
Un-powered sites $13.50 per person and powered sites $15.50 per person.

The 6 km detour to Okoroire from Tirau is well worth a visit to the Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel Camp! A restored country hotel and restaurant forms the hub of the community, and administers the delightful little camp nearby. The campsites are nestled on a bush-ringed knoll, with the tinkling sounds of the stream below. There are just 6 powered sites but plenty of room for tents. An oasis of hot thermal pools can be found in a private grotto, there are walking tracks through the bush, and the waterfalls of the Waihou River close by. A 9-hole golf course is right beside the camp. The simple facilities have character, and include separate toilets and a single shower. Campers can access the hotel coin operated laundry and an extra charge is levied for pool use.

All campground sites include a key to the Hot Springs. This campground is open all year round now.

A pleasant, art-deco-feeling hot spring retreat, tucked up against the foothills
of the Kaimai Ranges. Just 6 km east of Matamata, follow the signs out to
Opal Springs. Here you will find a comfortable camp with a hot mineral
pool complex (free for campers). In the valley below the camp, enjoy a large
heated swimming pool, or pay a little extra to enter the secluded, punga-ringed,
historic ‘Ramaroa Pool’. Campsites are spread across 3 elevated terraces, with
around 80 with power. There are free showers and toilets. A serviceable
kitchen has stoves, microwave, a fridge/freezer and opens to a BBQ terrace
with outdoor gazebo. There is a porch-style automatic laundry. The camp
store is well stocked and you can check your emails using the internet kiosk
or wireless is available throughout the camp. Aside from the pools, the kids
will enjoy the playground. Your hosts are Brian and Carrylline. Unpowered
tent sites are $18 .50 per person, with a powered site costing from $40 for

A welcoming roadhouse where you can stop overnight for FREE, 13 km east of Kawhia on the main road. Bill your friendly host, is happy for campervans and backpacking tenters to set up in the basic, grassy camping area behind the complex. You can't see it from the road, but the elevated campsite overlooks the pretty Oparau River mouth to the rear. There's no kitchen or shower facilities but you can access the public toilets in the roadhouse. A free dump station too. Stock up in the general store (which has absolutely everything including a lotto outlet and post office), or fill up at the petrol station. Take time out and dine in Brenda's cafe or sample their special KFC (Kawhia Fried Chicken) and homemade pies. Certainly worth calling or a one-stop-shop-overnight-spot! Oh! Yes, they will fill your gas bottle. A great place and great service.

This spacious and well-kept camp is very close to the local amenities on the eastern edge of town. To find it, turn off State Highway 3 either at the supermarket if coming from the south, or just before the railway crossing if coming from the north. The camps modern facilities include: two sparkling, fully-equipped kitchens; unisex individual combined shower and toilet suites plus additional toilets (the amenities block is wheelchair-friendly), and an automatic laundry and dump station. BBQ tables are scattered about the camp and beside the kitchen which has an impressive covered dining area. There is a TV room with internet kiosk. Wifi is available. stopover on SHwy 39 - between Otorohanga and Ngaruawahia. Designed
with the larger motorhome in mind, the 8 spacious powered sites, on gravel
hardstand, have their own entrance to the rear of the cafÉ complex. There
are great views of Mount Pirongia from the landscaped grounds. The facilities
include 3 modern bathroom suites, a laundry and dump station. There’s no
kitchen but the Persimmon Tree Cafe is open 7 days a week from 9-4.30 pm) so there’s no
danger of going hungry! Camping costs $6 per person per night (this will change on the 1st September 2019 to $6.50) , children

km (only last 5km gravel road) Over the hill is a beach popular for fishing and
surfing. There are 60 sites available, 10 with power. The fisherman’s kitchen

to the east, head south along the road to Matamata from Te Aroha. You’ll
spot the entrance flags of the holiday park not far out of town on your left.
Amongst mature oak trees. this park features hanging bridges, treehuts, giant
swings and the longest flying fox in New Zealand’s holiday park. Bush-clad
hills rise above you in the distance and the grounds are dotted with stately
old oak trees. A deep artesian spring supplies the camp with mineral water
and feeds the ‘rock pool’ thermal bath available free to campers. Enjoy the
grass tennis court, swimming pool and BBQs. In a quiet setting, the camp
is enclosed by farmland with provision for grazing if you are travelling with
equine companions. Amenities include, a serviceable kitchen with stove,
electric hobs, microwave and fridge/freezer; bright, tidy ablutions and a basic

Really get away from it all at the Waingaro Hot Springs and camp, 24 km west of Ngaruawahia next to the Waingaro Hotel. Camp on 40 powered sites set on pleasant sunny terraces (divided by bush and shrubbery) above the pools. The amenities are small, with a functional kitchen and a communal room with kitchenette. The well-used ablutions are in three blocks and extra toilets are handily placed about the grounds. Two automatic laundries and a dump station are provided. There are plenty of BBQs, picnic tables and children’s play areas about the grounds. Although the camp store at the entrance has limited supplies, we advise campers to stock-up in advance. Please do not bring pets here.

Immaculate ablutions include a disabled access/family suite. Extras include an internet room and wireless hotspot, SKY TV, reading room, trampoline, a superb swimming pool (with hot tub) and a bright new playground. You can see all this without leaving home, on the park virtual tour website. As well as the world-famous caves, there are bushwalks and other scenic tourist attractions nearby.
