DESCRIPTION:

South-west of New Plymouth, turn towards the coast off SHwy 45 onto Wairau Road and follow the camp signs for 13 kms. This is true beachfront camping at Taranaki's most popular swimming, surfing and windsurfing beach. Breathtaking views with just about every site looking out to sea. The camp is in two parts, with sites in the lower camp spread across two levels, some with stunning views of the Tasman Sea and others in a sheltered valley. The upper part is on a quiet terraced area above the main camp and is surrounded by bush and native birds. The amenities are good, although usage can be high at peak times. A well-equipped, sparkling kitchen has plenty of bench space and modern appliances. A great alternative is the BBQ. There are roomy showers and all the bathroom extras. Automatic machines can be found in the laundry and a dump station is provided. Although there are 117 sites with power plus 60 for tents, pre-booking for summer is advised. Laid out in a horseshoe are over 60 sites, this complex Is bordered with trees

groups. Spread across two levels, one holds the services block and the other

If you want a true kiwi camping experience, you will get it here at this sprawling
campground that boasts one of the best beaches on the peninsula and offers
safe, family-friendly camping in a beach front setting. There are two excellent
amenity blocks each containing a kitchen, toilets, washing facilities and coin
operated showers, as well as laundry facilities. Plenty for children to do when
they are finished swimming - flying foxes, a climbing frame, swings, slide and a
cycle track. Visit the highly rated Maori and Colonial Museum while you are
here or make use of the community tennis courts., there is a store located
in the village for your convenience and it's open seven days in peak season.
Definitely no dogs and no fires, there is a dump station available but you will
need to boil any water you use. Your friendly hosts are Darren and Michelle
Wallis Hartley. All sites are unpowered and charges are $12 per adult, $6 per
child (5 to15 years) and under 5 year olds are free.

DESCRIPTION:

Across the dunes from the beach, and nestled cosily amongst some trees,
is this cute little community run camp. The sites are grassed and there are
basic showers and toilets, including a paraplegic toilet. A $1 coin will buy you
four minutes of showering, but if you want to do any washing you will have  to do it by hand… and use the wringer over the concrete twin tub! Yes, there are still camps like this in New Zealand. There is a purpose built lounge and
dining room that has a fridge, sink and card phone, and although it is an open
door building, it is well sheltered inside. An electric barbecue is available at $2
for 20 minutes and the camp offers fresh water, fire places, picnic tables and
rubbish collection. Dogs are allowed as long as they are under strict control
at all times. The local community warns you to take care when swimming, as
there are dangerous currents. Camp fees are $12.50 per adult with children

Okiwi Bay Holiday Park and Lodge is not right on the beach, but there is a boat ramp about 400 metres away. The grounds are neat and landscaped with 12 level sites, all have power and water and lovely sheltered trees. A shop is available with a good range of everyday supplies, and you can get your dive bottles filled, petrol or diesel and fill LPG bottles here. An immaculate kitchen has two full gas stoves and all other amenities, plus a BBQ, as well as a covered dining area outside. The ablutions are well designed, light and airy, with hand basins in the free shower and toilet cubicles plus a disability suite. Automatic machines are provided in the laundry, a phone is on-site and free wifi is available. So many things to do such as fishing, diving and scalloping, charter a boat, or take a guided trip. Kayaks and mountain bikes can be hired locally, there is a dump station and fish filleting bay provided. This is a pet friendly camp and your friendly hosts are Pam and Ian Montgomery. Both powered and unpowered sites are $20 per day for an adult, children 12 years and under $12.50, two years and under are free. Tent RCD cords are available for hire at $6 per day.

The 6 km detour to Okoroire from Tirau is well worth a visit to the Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel Camp! A restored country hotel and restaurant forms the hub of the community, and administers the delightful little camp nearby. The campsites are nestled on a bush-ringed knoll, with the tinkling sounds of the stream below. There are just 6 powered sites but plenty of room for tents. An oasis of hot thermal pools can be found in a private grotto, there are walking tracks through the bush, and the waterfalls of the Waihou River close by. A 9-hole golf course is right beside the camp. The simple facilities have character, and include separate toilets and a single shower. Campers can access the hotel coin operated laundry and an extra charge is levied for pool use. Your host is Travis Park.

Costs are $20 per adult per Powered Site and $17.50 per adult per Non-Powered Site. Thermal Hot Springs $20 per person per day. Children under 13 years $5 per day. If you stay at the Camp Ground for two nights, the second days entry to the Hot Pools is free.

Something special in rural camping here as you soak up the peaceful environment of this delightful setting. From the leafy bowers, to the large sites in the Bull Paddock, this is a place to make your escape. Divided into two camping area, both have large dividing trees and shrubs.  A spectacular location, wrapped around the
sheltered Onaero River mouth and surrounded by bush. Its great outdoor
environment, along with limited cellphone coverage, means this is the
ideal spot to get away from it all! Just 11.5km north of Waitara, the
layout of the camp is very user-friendly, with 57 level power sites
and 30 tent sites scattered across well-manicured grounds. The pretty
beach is safe for swimming, has good fishing and whitebaiting and
views out to the offshore drilling rig on the horizon. Three kitchens
mean plenty of room for all and a small shop is onsite for snacks. The
amenities are excellent. The laundries have drying facilities and a
dump point is provided. There is a kids playground. . Your friendly

A rustic, beachside camp about 17 km east of Opotiki, it has tidy grounds with 80 sites, 40 with power. You can see White Island from the open sites, which have direct access to the white sandy beach with gorgeous sunsets and great fishing. A tidy communal building has basic amenities and a kitchen without refrigeration. The laundry is an experience with an old wringer washing machine in good working order. The hot water showers are free & ablutions are clean. This camp is run by the Jackson family, who will need cash or cheque only for payment. All tent sites are from $10 per person and powered sites are $12.50 per person per night. Your pet will cost $2.50 with a limit of one dog per group.

A welcoming roadhouse where you can stop overnight for FREE, 13 km east of Kawhia on the main road. Bill your friendly host, is happy for campervans and backpacking tenters to set up in the basic, grassy camping area behind the complex. You can't see it from the road, but the elevated campsite overlooks the pretty Oparau River mouth to the rear. There's no kitchen or shower facilities but you can access the public toilets in the roadhouse. A free dump station too. Stock up in the general store (which has absolutely everything including a lotto outlet and post office), or fill up at the petrol station. Take time out and dine in Brenda's cafe or sample their special KFC (Kawhia Fried Chicken) and homemade pies. Certainly worth calling or a one-stop-shop-overnight-spot! Oh! Yes, they will fill your gas bottle. A great place and great service.

On a pleasant, slightly elevated site this camp is across the road from the
beach. There is a vista of sand dunes and sparkling water from most parts of
the camp. The kitchen has microwave, gas hot plate cooking, 3 fridge/freezers
and opens to a recently extended covered dining deck with a large macrocapa
topped table. The BBQ is free and there is plenty of seating. The ablutions
are positioned at either end of the building and are in a tidy condition. There
is also a children’s play area. Goats around the camp are keeping the grass on
the banks down. Jenny and Harry Barlow are your hosts. Tent sites are $18
per person and with power $20.

Opoutere Coastal Camping is set alongside the Wharekawa Wildlife Sanctuary and broad sweep of Opoutere surf beach. This coastal hideaway is just 5 km from SHwy 25 and less than two hours drive from Auckland airport. The camp is open Labour Weekend to the end of April, and the offce/shop at the entrance offers basic supplies and controls the barrier arm card access way. Choose from a mixture of 25 powered and plenty of non-powered sites spread across bush-ringed grounds. There are two ablution blocks with unisex metered shower cubicles and a disabled access suite. The kitchens have all the usual equipment (no oven) and a covered verandah with BBQ for relaxed, outdoor meals. An automatic laundry and dump station are provided and the camp is suited to large vehicles. Enjoy the bushwalks and beachwalks, mountain biking and kayaking on hand. Half an hour from Hawera, an attractive bush-reserve approach leads to this
beachside camp. Opunake is a traditional holiday spot, with the rest of the
sheltered bay housing the surf club and an artificial surf reef just offshore. Nearby activities include boating, surfcasting, swimming and water skiing.
The grounds are level grass, with 95 powered sites and 10 tent sites in a
ribbon layout. The amenities block has a kitchen with stoves, bench cooktops,

Road access is from Tripp Settlement Road, then on to Yates Road. The
campsite is set in 80ha of native bush, on the low foothills between Yates
Road and Station Stream and opposite the Glenburn Youth Camp. There is a relatively easy forest walk of about three hours, partly along the line of an old bush tramway and passing through several quite distinct forest types. The high point gives good views out across surrounding countryside. The campsite is close to the Orari River, which has good fishing. There is usually a water supply (but not for drinking), toilets, rubbish collection, picnic tables and barbecues.
No other fires please. Dogs are not permitted. Price per adult is $6.10 for a
site with an extra $2.50 for power per site.

An hour's drive east of Auckland airport is this relaxed and well-equipped camp, set in pleasant surroundings with a sparkling river alongside that boasts a large swimming hole and sheltered beach close by. In the attractively-planted grounds you can either find a remote spot or be sociable. The camp is split into two levels, on one level are 110 powered sites, some with permanent weekenders in residence. A central kitchen serves both levels and you can dine indoors or outside in the paved BBQ garden. A porch provides another washing-up area with hot water, fridge and a filtered drinking-water tap. since its inception around 70 years ago! Located at the southern end of
lovely Orewa Beach, turn at the traffic lights. The grounds are flat, with big

serviced by excellent amenities, splendidly maintained, including disability
toilets and showers. There are sunny kitchen/dining areas plus gas BBQ’s.

Otautu Bay Farm Camp is a 30 minute drive north from Coromandel town and 10 minutes north from Colville (on mainly sealed road). Colville has a general store and is the most northern stop for petrol/gas and general supplies. The camp which is bordered by a working farm is spread along most of the bay which provides boat launching, excellent fishing, kayaking and a beautiful safe, sandy swimming beach. A short drive out of town, take Cobham Road to Inlet Road and turn into
Pa Road. Here you can enjoy the secluded atmosphere of this smaller camp.
There are16 lawn sites with power and shady trees that are very inviting with
direct access, by a bush walk, to town. Sited on the Kerikeri Inlet, there is a jetty
and boat ramp. You can hire kayaks, one of the fully furnished safari tents, or

In the heart of tui country (the bird and the beer!) this un-crowded camp is
located on the southern edge of Pahiatua township beside two hectares of
native bush. Sheltered by a high macrocarpa hedge, the grounds are beautifully
kept, with open sites of a generous size, some with large shade trees. The
ablutions and kitchen are basic, but lovely and clean. The kitchen has a stock
of pots, crockery and cutlery and the separate dining area is surrounded by
glass sliding doors and outdoor seating. There is a TV lounge also. On a patio
outside the kitchen you will find an automatic washing machine and dryer and
a dump station is provided. There is a BBQ for campers and a children’s play area.

Pets are okay by arrangement only. 18 sites have power and are $25
for two adults, $10 for each extra adult. Tent sites are $10 per adult with
children half price and under 5’s free. Your on-site host is Karolyn. Prices

Pakawau Beach Park Camp is located a 35 minute drive from Takaka, these beachside sites are protected from the onshore wind by borders of shrubs and trees without blocking the gorgeous view. There are more sites in the hedge bordered avenues back from the beach as well, with the odd BBQ table scattered around. The kitchen has a gas hob, microwave, fridges and a freezer, while the dining area is housed in a separate room with BBQ picnic tables. The well used ablutions are roomy and clean, with spacious cubicles for the showers and a disability suite is available.
The laundry has automatic washers and dryer, all token operated. A children’s play area is close to the main amenities block and there is a boat ramp for campers to use, but a 4WD is required. Across the road is a licensed café
restaurant with a garden bar and you can use the tennis court situated there. The Gateway to Westhaven Inlet is a magical place to go fishing, bird watching,  or a walk to the Kaihoka lakes. It is only a 10 to15 minute drive to the Farewell Spit, Puponga Farm Park walks and the stunning Wharariki Beach.

on a superb east coast beach. The approach takes you along about 3km of
gravel road. Alongside the entrance is an office/store. Security gates protect
the camp from unwanted visitors. The camp is well laid out and the camping
area is spacious, flat and grassed with shelter from the predominant winds.
There are 15 power sites and 90 unpowered sites and a children’s playground
is set up in a tree-shaded corner near the entrance to the park. The basic
TV room adjoins a games room. The lined ablutions are in two blocks, with
roomy 50 cent metered showers plus a separate disability suite. The laundry
has good commercial wash and drying machines, with an annexe for tubs,
babies’ bath and ironing. The kitchen has gas hobs and all other facilities with
a servery to the smart dining room. A picnic marquee is great for summer
dining. No dogs here please. You hosts are Andre and Martie van Schalkwyk

Large trees provide shelter and shade and continue the ambience of the adjacent Victoria Esplanade Gardens where bush walks, aviary, rose gardens, the Lido Aquatic Park, an adventure playground and miniature train will keep the younger family members entertained. There’s room to move, with around 85 tent sites and 75 powered sites - 30 or so with double hard-paved stands, waste and sewerage drop points.
