Take the Kellys Bay turnoff as signposted from Pouto Rd. The next 6 km is metal (slow down and take quietly).
This is home to spectacular flocks of oyster catchers, stilts, terns and other sea birds. The camp is a tidy level grassed area across the road from the waters of this quiet sheltered bay.
There are 14 power and 10 non powered sites. Facilities are minimal, water taps and clean long drop toilets only.
A two cubicle shed is provided so you can use your own solar shower.
There is good shell and boat fishing, while the children have a safe swimming beach and colourful play equipment.
Eftpos is provided (Debit card only) and the last stop for petrol is Dargaville, so make sure you have plenty to get you back. The last shop is at Te Kopuru. So please ensure you have plenty of food. Terry and Jenny are your hosts.
Charges: available here, half way down the page.
Mangawhai Heads Holiday Park is right on the estuary. This camp is divided
in two by the entrance road. On the south side level sites are fairly open,
with a few trees. Up to 88 power sites and 111 tent sites. Good beachstyle
metred ablutions. A bright sunny kitchen has ceramic hobs, ovens, fridge
and plenty of bench space, but no inside dining. A good automatic laundry is
alongside. On the north side of the road is the camp office leading to a more
secluded setting, with some attractive sheltered spots for tenting and views
directly through the Heads to the ocean. Here there is an attractive play area,
a block of basic toilets and two showers that are handy. ($1 for 7 minutes)
This is a lovely coastal spot with a choice of camping amenities. The hosts here
are Richard and Noela Gunson. Power sites are $18 per adult, $8 per child
and tent sites are from $16 per adult. Seasonal rates apply.
Here is a special little camp with welcoming, helpful hosts. Set in 20 acres of land, the _business area_ occupies an elevated platform overlooking the Kaipara harbour on both sides. A track leads you down to the beach. The sites are gently terraced with each level offering private nooks surrounded by trees, and each has its own picnic table. There are 30 neat sites (some with individual lights). First class amenities are set in a colonial style building. The kitchen/lounge and dining area are lavishly equipped and stylish with a comfortable TV area. Free gas BBQ_s are available. An on-site store provides basics. Wireless and broadband internet are available. You can enjoy a game of Petanque, while, for the children, there is an adventure play area. A very comfortable stay while you enjoy water views over the Kaipara. Visit the Matakohe Kauri Museum at the entrance and dine at the hotel next door. Your hosts are Vanessa and Francis. All sites are $20 per person, Children under 14yrs are $10. Seasonal rates may apply.
A magical spot this is ‘real Kiwi camping’. The camp stretches over a promontory
and gives access across two beaches. One cliff has sites with spectacular views,
with access right down to the water in the second bay. You will be spoiled for
choice here; take your pick, sea view, green valley or beachside. Many sites are
hewn from the hillside where you will be quite a distance from your neighbour.
This camp is a working farm so please leave your dog at home. You will need
to be self-sufficient as there are just cold water showers, but numerous taps
and pit toilets are dotted around. There is no power, but freezer space may
be hired in the building near the entrance which also has a recharge centre for
all those gadgets. No fires are allowed, use gas only.
Your hosts, the Barron family live at the camp entrance. Charges for adults are $15 and for children
(5 to14 years) $7 with a minimum site charge of $30 in peak season.
