Motunau is a lovely beachside settlement, with a river opening to the sea. Not
right on the beach but at the river mouth, this camping area has pleasant open
areas with shady trees. Only flush toilets and water here, just turn up and put
your payment in the honesty box if no one is around as there are no bookings.
$10 per site per night (subject to change by the MBRA) .
A remote camp with just toilets and water, this site was looking pretty run
down last time we were through. It is listed in the Hurunui District Council
camping grounds, but is administered by the Domett Reserve Committee.
Maximum of 24 campsites but wouldn't take a large vehicle in there as the
sites are spotted around in amongst bushes and trees. There is good fishing
in the river and the sea. No power but a site will cost you $8 per night to be
put in the honesty box.
20 Power Sites
The wild wild west comes to the South Island in this campground based in rural
farmland. Buildings that range from logs cabins to corrugated huts, through
to mud brick houses, it is an interesting place to recharge your batteries, or a comfortable stopover on your journey. A large and level grassed area is
provided for both powered and non powered sites, with very large trees for
shade. Not wanting anyone to be hemmed in, there is plenty of space for
everyone. Rustic and quirky are words that come to mind here, don't expect
spotless amenities and manicured lawns. Facilities include showers and toilets,
a small camp kitchen, and a large common room with table tennis and large
couches so you have somewhere out of the rain if needed. The outside BBQ
dining area, doubles as the limited wifi hotspot. Walks through the forest, huge
trees to admire, or look at the 'old stuff' shed. Your hosts are Stephen and
Linda and a site will cost $18 per person.
What a beautiful setting this camping ground is in. A well cared for, tree
sheltered camp with numerous tent sites and 10 power points. You can enjoy
peace and quiet in a relaxed atmosphere. A round of golf maybe, or a walk
to the top of the hill to take in the views, perhaps you would like to try your
hand at fishing in the nearby rivers. A swimming pool with a deck, seating and
a BBQ is provided for your enjoyment. The roomy fully equipped kitchen/
dining area has been upgraded and there are plenty of tables and chairs, as well
as provision for outside dining. The laundry has new coin operated washers
and dryers, and the ablutions are very clean, with towels available for campers.

The Gore Bay campsite is on both sides of Moody Street, with the shore
side camp set above the beach with access to the water and views to die for.
There are some stately norfolk pines and hedges for shelter and the facilities
are spotlessly clean with hot showers and a disability suite. A combination
porch style kitchen, dining and laundry area has cooking equipment, a fridge/freezer and an auto washing machine, all clean and tidy. The beach is safe for swimming and great for surfing. A card phone is close by.
You will see Buxton Camp as you drive in, right on the beach front. You can choose your own site and set if after checking the bookings board/map in the kitchen kiosk. It has new gas hot showers which are really good!
A flat paddock with the sea just over the bank, camping is around the perimeter so it can be used for cricket and bikes. There is an outside kitchen area for washing dishes, and basic but clean hot showers and toilets. Beside this camp is a childrens’ playground.
Neither camp has Eftpos or credit card facilities and no dogs are allowed.
Stop for a chat with your friendly hosts Mike Watson and his wife Kim Bestic.
